Agriculture is the main and important occupation of Yelagiri. Paddy and sugarcane are cultivated in the areas where water source has no dearth. They earn some money by selling milk, and cattle rearing. There are agricultural officers to develop agriculture.In some places Coffee and pepper are cultivated.
SERICULTURE
There is a Sericulture Farm run by State Government in collaboration with Central Government. The government officers stay in this farm and work. Mulberi leaves are cultivated and eggs are bred, where from Silk Worms are obtained. These bred eggs are sold outside. There are also housing and special units for manufacturing of silk worm.
PUNGANOOR ARTIFICIAL LAKE PARK
It is one of the most enjoyable places on the hill. It is adjacent to a lake. It is a well maintained park. The Lake is spread over 56.706 Sq.m. It has the Water capacity of 4.88 million Cubic feet and the depth of 10 to 20meters. Around the lake, there is a well-cemented footpath of about 2 k.m. distance to have a pleasant stroll. Park open hours 6.00am to 6.00pm , Entry fee Rs.03/- only. This Punganoor Lake has boating facilities- Boating for 30 minutes Row Boat Rs.15/- for Adult, Rs 10/- for paddle Boat Rs.25/-for 30 minutes.
NATURE PARK
A Beautiful Nature park with Fountains, Well Laid out gardens Artificial water falls for bathing, Rock garden, Fish Aquarium, Green House Nursery, Poly House, Children Playing Toy’s with Synthetic floor, Indoor games, etc… Is here. Entry fee Rs.15/-for Adults, Rs.5/-for Children opening hours 8Am to 9Pm. A well laid out musical Fountain is the added attraction here. Show timings 7 pm to 8 pm. Entry fee Rs.25/-
TELESCOPE HOUSE
On the way to Yelagiri at the height of 1002 meter before thirteenth bend, There is a Telescope house, which is maintained by the Forest Department. Through that Telescope, we can have the panoramic view of the plains.
NILAVOOR LAKE& PARK
A well laidout garden like the own at Athanavoor is created at Nilavoor 3 km from athanavoor. A good boat house is also located here. Park Entry fee Rs.3/- Open Hours 6.00 am to 6.00pm Boating Row Boat for 30 mintes Rs.15/-for Adults, Rs.5/-for Childrens. Paddle boat Rs.25/- for 30 Minutes.
TREKKING:
In the interior of the dense forest of Yelagiri, to have trekking, there is path starting from the Eastern side of the lake upto its western side. When we have an trekking through, we can see varieties of birds, plants, Honey combs, small animals and etc… enjoy the water falls, peaks of the mountain and Valleys. The following are the points of trekking. It is open to all. Permission to be obtained from District Forest Officer, Tirupattur.

MURUGAN TEMPLE (Walkable Destance from Boat House)-Sudhagar
This Murugan Temple is a place of worship for the people of this hill. It was built in 1964 under the supervision of the engineer Shri .Jaganthan and The Temple Priest, Shri.NACHEE. Till today, it is the family of shri.NACHEE that has been looking after the cults and ritual part of the temple. It was for the first time on the hill electric supply was given to this temple, and in the very Year, the celebration of kumbhbishgam was held. Every Year Aadi madha festival is celebrated on a very grand scale here. As it is located on the top of the hill, it is being surrounded by nature beauty. A statue of kadorkajan ercted on the side of this temple also adds beauty to this hill. (Muruganswamy, Vinayagar, Iddumbansilai, Valli-Thaivaai , Anchaneyr, )
THE NATURAL BEAUTY AND SPECIALITY OF YELAGIRI HILLS-Sudhagar
When we travel through the 14 bends, we can see the scenic beauty of trees, dense grass, lawns, and flowers on either side of the road. The scenes captivate and enrapture the minds and souls of the travelers. The names of the kings and poets, which are engraved on each bend make us to remember them. The tall eucalyptus trees, which are seemingly to touch the sky, from the 14th bend, stand as green columns and pillars connecting these hills with moving clouds in the sky. We can feel the chillness and the cool breeze when one climbs up and reaches the peak of the hill.
The mountain with dense grown trees surrounding the small villages looks like a palace surrounded by great boundary walls. The Yelagiri is full of water, like ponds, lakes, water falls, streams, entertaining park, boating , many colorful flowers, green tree, and thorny plants. When we come down at night. We can see the glowing lights around the hills, especially of vaniyambadi, and twinkling stars in the sky.
A BRIEF ON Yelagiri HILLS
The Yelagiri Panchayat comes under Solaiyar pettai Panchayat Union. It is situated in vellore District. It is located about 15 km away from Vaniyambadi – Tirupattur Road from Ponneri Split Road….
The total area of Yelagiri Hills is about 29.2 sq.km. The base of this hill is circular in shape, and it has steep rocks on its sides. This hill resembles a plateau. It has evergreen trees in the north and north-east slopes. On the top of the hill, it has an evergreen forest.
The height of this hill in terms of feet is approximately 3500 and 1048.5 m high in meter from sea level. The highest peak in this hill is Swamimalai peak and its height is 4338 feet. The climate of the hill is moderate and pleasant. The temperature of the hill in summer is 29 C and in winter season it is 9c.
The people of the hill are normally called hilly vasis. Cultivation is their main occupation. They practice Hinduism and speak Tamil. They have a very special structure of living style in home cottages and typical social customs and culture.
